Story, with more details, of how this all came about, can be found here –

Fred Hughson – Back row, third from right
Ken Walker – Middle row, second from left

Bob Muir – Middle row, fourth from left
Bill Maslen – Middle row, third from right
Frank Dowling – Front row, second from left
Les Main – Middle row, far right
Claude Cannaway – Back row, far right
Apart from Hughson and Dowling, Cannaway is the only other player that should be in 1934 and 1937 photos.
1934 photo (Front row, far left) –
William ‘Billy’ Walsh – Front row, far right
Was initially listed as L. Walsh –
However, after searching old newspaper articles on Trove, the following was found –
Broke his leg, and listed as L. Walsh, in game against Oakleigh in May 1935 –
However, in this article; ‘Player Breaks Leg’; he is named as W. Walsh. It also states that that it is his first game for Preston since returning from Melbourne –
This article states his name is William –
But also known as ‘Billy’ –
Under ‘Permits Granted’, clearance from Melbourne to Preston for W. J. Walsh, in May 1935 –
So, L. Walsh above, is actually –
William Walsh – 18-2-1911 – 11-9-1986. 177cms. Preston 1932-33, 1935-37. Melbourne 1934 (3 games). Fitzroy 1944 (1 game).
He is correctly listed on The VFA Project here –
Which, while it’s still a work in progress, means he should also be in the 1933 photo.
1933 Preston Team Photo
William ‘Billy’ Walsh – Front row, third from right
Edwin Latham – Poss front row, second from right. (partly based on height, as he’s only 158cms.
Update May, 2021 –
Mentioned (as Teddy) as having played for Kew in the 1935 sub-district league Grand Final here –
1935 Kew Team Photo, courtesy of Boyles Football Photos.
Edwin Latham, front row, centre.
Made both the best players and goal kicking list –
In 1936 he was cleared to Footscray –
And then in 1937 he was cleared to Preston –
Photo from Scotch College website –
which is a bit of a guess as to who he actually is.
Also mentioned here – https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/92434/blues-little-big-man-remembered
Edwin Gilbert – Poss back row, far left. (Guess based on Gilbert and Jones being in both the 37 and 38 photos)
Thomas Jones – Poss back row, second from left. (Guess based on Jones and Gilbert being in both the 37 & 38 photos)
Other players selected for R4, 1937 –
Noel Fisher – 26-2-1912 – 21-5-1985. 179cms. FF.
Kevin Brown – CHB, Follower, flanks. Injured in the final quarter of R4 game with a possible arm fracture and doesn’t play again in 1937. Heading – Bisset Injured – https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/19265389
Assuming photo is taken before or during the game, Brown should be in it. Will also be in 1938 and 1940 photos, but struggling to find a match.
Darrell Wilkins – 1-10-1915 – 1-1-1964. 170cms.
Harry Clack – Wing. Played in 1934 Northcote GF, with Jack Haskett, and should be in Northcote’s team photo, but can’t make a match –
Having seen a much clearer copy of the 1934 Northcote photo, Middle row, second from right, has similarities with Front row, far left, in this 1937 Preston photo.
Phil Dunstone – 19th man. Don’t believe he is in it.
