Bert Hyde – Middle row, third from left

Bob Muir – Middle row, fourth from left

Bill Maslen – Middle row, third from right,_Bill_’Socks’.php

Frank Dowling – Front row, second from left

Les Main – Middle row, far right  from

Claude Canaway – Back row, far right

Apart from Hughson and Dowling, Canaway is the only other player that should be in the 1934 and 1937 photos.

1934 photo (Front row, far left) –

William ‘Billy’ Walsh – Front row, far right

Was initially listed as L. Walsh –,_L__Pre35.php

However, after searching old newspaper articles on Trove, the following was found –

Broke his leg, and listed as L. Walsh, in game against Oakleigh in May 1935 –

However, in this article; ‘Player Breaks Leg’; he is named as W. Walsh. It also states that that it is his first game for Preston since returning from Melbourne –

This article states his name is William –

But also known as ‘Billy’ –

Under ‘Permits Granted’, clearance from Melbourne to Preston for W. J. Walsh, in May 1935 –

So, L. Walsh above, is actually –

William Walsh – 18-2-1911 – 11-9-1986. 177cms. Preston 1932-33, 1935-37. Melbourne 1934 (3 games). Fitzroy 1944 (1 game).

He is correctly listed on The VFA Project here –,_W._J.__Pre32.php

Which, while it’s still a work in progress, means he should also be in the 1933 photo.

William ‘Billy’ Walsh – Front row, third from right

Edwin Latham – Poss front row, second from right. (partly based on height, as he’s only 158cms.

Update May, 2021 –

Mentioned (as Teddy) as having played for Kew in the 1935 sub-district league Grand Final here –

Edwin Latham, front row, centre.

Made both the best players and goal kicking list –

In 1936 he was cleared to Footscray –

And then in 1937 he was cleared to Preston –

Photo from Scotch College website –

which is a bit of a guess as to who he actually is.

Edwin Latham?

Also mentioned here –

Thomas Jones – Back row, far left, or second from left. (Guess based on Jones and Gilbert being in both the 37 & 38 photos)

Update August 2021 –

April 1937, to Preston from North Melbourne –

April 1936, G. Jones, (and gets mentioned in several articles as G. Jones in 1936) the Pascoe Vale centre half back at North Melbourne –

Late May 1936, T. G. Jones finally receives a permit (had been declined earlier) to North Melbourne from Coburg and Pascoe Vale (several mentions of playing at Pascoe Vale in 1935 were found) –

Searching 1936 North Melbourne players by the name of Jones, revealed a player known as Garmah, which is short for Togarmah. The resultant research found –

Thomas Togarmah ‘Garmah’ Jones – 21-2-1915 – 20-12-1998. 178cms. North Melbourne 1936 (1 game). Preston 1937-39. Coburg 1940-41. Coached Pascoe Vale to a premiership in 1946.

The clearance from Preston to Coburg in 1940 –

ultimately led to the identification, when he was found in a 1940 Coburg team photo found here.

Which, incidentally, I’d had for quite some time, seeing as it helped me find Joe Beagley.

Edwin Gilbert – Back row, far left, or second from left. (Guess based on Gilbert and Jones being in both the 37 and 38 photos)

Update August 2021 –

With the identification of Thomas Jones, Back row, second from left.

Kevin Brown – CHB, Follower, flanks.   Injured in the final quarter of R4 game with a possible arm fracture and doesn’t play again in 1937.  Heading – Bisset Injured –

Should be in 1937 photo, and will be in 1938 and 1940 photos.

Update August 2021 –

Back row, second from right, based on a match in both the 1938 and 1940 photos.  Although this 1937 photo isn’t as compelling with the other two.

Harry Clack – Wing.  Played in 1934 Northcote GF, with Jack Haskett, and should be in Northcote’s team photo –

Update August 2021 –

Middle row, second from right, based on finding Brown, who else remains, as well as having a much closer look at the Northcote photo. (Northcote photo – back row, second from left.)

Other players selected for R4, 1937 –

Noel Fisher – 26-2-1912 – 21-5-1985. 179cms. FF.

Based on heights and who remains, suspect middle row, far left.

Darrell Wilkins – 1-10-1915 – 1-1-1964. 170cms.

Based on heights and who remains, suspect front row, far left.

Phil Dunstone – 19th man. Don’t believe he is in it.
